Last month, Ask.com announced that they will be going back to their roots in an effort to gain ground on the big three of Google, Yahoo, and Bing. This means that they would be doing the whole question and answer thing so that people can just type in their question on Ask.com’s front page and be given a list of web pages where the answer would be found. This is kind of like searching for your answers using Yahoo Answers.

Then, Facebook rolled out their question and answer feature which looks to take advantage of the collective knowledge of 500 million or so people using the social networking site. With this feature, you can ask a question just like you would post a status message only that the question would be made public. This is expected to make it easier for people in the know to find your question and answer it accordingly.

The two scenarios above might be showing where the search engine landscape might be going. If Facebook and Ask somehow pull off good results with such features, we might see the big three following suit. Google’s own question and answer have been shut down already. Yahoo Answers on the other hand is still big. If the question and answer feature in search becomes popular with browsers, we might see both search engine giant making changes to their question and answer features.

For online entrepreneurs, this could mean a shift or an addition in your search engine optimization tactics. If Facebook Answers become popular, you should consult your SEO consultant how you can take advantage of that situation. Remember that you can provide relevant answers to people and still be able to push whatever you are selling to them so long as it is done right.

Your SEO consultant would be able to recommended better techniques for you if you are already working with one. But since we are still not sure where this Facebook Questions will go in terms of relationship to the search landscape, you might want to keep an eye out for a good SEO consultant just in case this thing goes huge.
